Writing Compelling Calls to Action (CTAs): Do’s and Don’ts

Are your website visitors passing by without taking action? A well-crafted Call to Action (CTA) could be the key to turning those passive viewers into active customers. Whether you’re looking to boost your newsletter sign-ups, increase product sales, or simply get more engagement, learning how to create compelling CTAs is crucial.

Consider this:

“A strong CTA doesn’t just demand attention; it inspires action. It’s not about forcing a decision—it’s about making the decision feel effortless.”

In this article, we’ll dive into the essential elements of effective CTAs, explore different types of CTAs, and provide helpful tips to make sure yours are driving conversions. Ready to transform your CTAs from unnoticed to unforgettable? Let’s get started!

First things first, consider the overall design of your page. Your CTA should not just blend in; it needs to stand out. This is where color, shape, and placement play crucial roles. For instance, experimenting with different color combinations can help you identify what works best for grabbing user attention. Popular options include contrasting colors that make the button pop.

Speaking of shapes, it’s more than just aesthetics. The design of your CTA button can significantly impact its effectiveness. Rounded rectangles are a common choice, but don’t hesitate to try squared-off rectangles, scalloped edges, or even ovals. Each shape can evoke a different feeling and might resonate more with your target audience.

Placement is another key element. Positioning your CTAs above the fold can reduce friction and increase conversions. But don’t stop there—adding supporting text nearby can provide additional context and make your message even more compelling. For instance, a short sentence that explains the benefit or urgency can make a world of difference.

Want to make your CTA even more effective? Consider creating a sense of urgency with time-oriented wording. Phrases like “Limited Time Offer” or “Act Now” can prompt immediate action. Combine this with large, readable text to ensure your message is clear and direct.

Finally, don’t underestimate the power of white space. This often overlooked element can draw attention to your CTA by reducing clutter and focusing users’ eyes exactly where you want them to look. It might seem counterintuitive to leave space empty, but in reality, it highlights your call-to-action, making it more likely to be clicked.

White space, or negative space, should be strategically placed to create a natural flow. Think of it like a spotlight—when used correctly, it draws visitors’ attention directly to your CTA without distraction. This is especially crucial for mobile users, where screen real estate is limited. By decluttering the area around your CTA button, you make it the star of the show.

Additionally, consider the other design elements on your page. A highly contrasting design for your CTA button ensures it stands out. You don’t want your CTA blending in with the background or being overshadowed by other graphic elements. Using a bold, contrasting color can create that necessary visual break, making your CTA more prominent and enticing.

Graphics and icons can also enhance your CTA. When used thoughtfully, they can clarify the offer and make it more appealing. For example, a small arrow icon might suggest the next step, subtly encouraging users to click. However, always ensure these elements support the primary goal of drawing attention to the call-to-action and not distracting from it.

Images and visual cues are your allies in guiding visitors’ eyes toward your CTA. Use them strategically to create a visual journey that leads directly to your button. For instance, an image of a person looking or pointing towards your CTA can subtly nudge users to follow along.

Remember, the goal is to draw attention without overwhelming. Maintain a balance by ensuring that your primary call-to-action stands out the most. To achieve this, consider using grayscale or colors that blend with your page for any secondary buttons or elements. This hierarchy ensures that the main CTA is the star of the show.

Another powerful tool is urgency. Adding a sense of urgency to your CTA copy, like ‘Get Started Now’ or ‘Limited Time Offer,’ compels visitors to act immediately rather than defer their decision.

Color choice is crucial, too. Bright, eye-catching colors such as green or orange often perform well for CTA buttons. Ensure these colors contrast with the rest of your page to make your call-to-action pop. However, always keep your brand’s color scheme in mind to maintain a cohesive look.

Finally, don’t be afraid to experiment with shapes. Rounded rectangles, scalloped edges, or even ovals can attract attention and make your CTA button visually appealing. Play around with different designs to see what resonates best with your audience.
